Description of the White Stork Picture: Scientific name: (Ciconia ciconia) White Storks are usually found in Central and Eastern Europe, winter in Africa and about a quarter of the worlds population of storks breeds in Poland. White Storks habitat areas with access to marshlands such as in trees situated in open parklands. The White Stork have they have a habit of building their nests on man made structures such as rooftops, telegraph poles and chimneys in towns and cities since the Middle Ages. Man has since constructed special nest towers place in special areas to encourage for White Stork nesting. During their breeding season the female species will lay up to seven eggs and both male and female take it in turns to incubate the eggs for 35 days. The White Stork are large birds with a wing span of 6ft 5inches and they rely on thermals of warm air to enable them to soar over long distances during migration. As thermals only form over land, migrating storks must cross the Mediterranean at its narrowest points. Sometimes hundreds of storks may be seen flying across the straits of Gibraltar and the Bosphorus if you are lucky to see them.
