Brief Description of Koi Fish in the Photograph: During the 17th century in China the Chinese rice farmers began keeping a fish known as carp in their rice paddies. This practice found its way into Japan. The Japanese rice farmers became aware of colouring variations of the carp fish and. bred these "mutants" into what eventually became what we know as the Koi fish.
