Picture of Black Sheep

Description of Sheep: A black sheep is shown in the picture above but did you that there are more than 200 breeds of domestic sheep throughout the world. Sheep on the whole are herbivorous mammals and like all ruminants such as cows, sheep have a rather complex digestive system which is composed of four chambers. All ruminants animals has this complex digestive system which enables them to break down cellulose from the type of food they eat such as tree leaves, stems and seeds. These are broken down into carbohydrates. When a vegetation is chewed by the sheep into a mass called bolus it is then passed into the first chamber known as the rumen. The  rumen is an organ with a capacity of between 5 and 10 gallons which ferment the feed by use of a symbiotic symbiotic connection with the bacteria, protozoa, and yeasts of the gut flora. This is how complex the sheep's digestive system works. The bolus from time to time regurgitated back to the mouth as cud for additional chewing and salivation. This enables the sheep to graze more quickly in the morning, and then fully chew and digest the feed later in the day by chewing their cud. Often times you will see sheep and cows laying down and their mouths moving from side to side. This is an indication that ruminants are chewing their cuds. In relation to the picture of the Black Sheep shown above, some of you will remember the nursery rhyme of your childhood days in school; "Baa baa black sheep have you any wool".
