Black-tailed Prairie Dog Picture
Brief Description of Black-tailed Prairie Dog: Scientific name (Cynomys ludovicianus). Black Prairie Dogs are burrowing squirrels that get their name from one of their several alarm calls which sounds like a barking dog. Prairie dogs (rodents) once lived in huge colonies called "towns" often containing several thousand prairie animals covering many acres of land. Because these burrowing black-tailed Prairie Dog animals compete with domestic livestock for food, they also consume cultivated crops, for this reason their large colonies were destroyed. The Black-tailed Prairie Dog habitats open plains and plateaus. These North American animals have a life-span of up to 8 years in captivity!
